“God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks to us in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: It is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world” (C.S. Lewis, The Problem of Pain).
Whenever tragedy strikes, the question must be asked: What is God trying to say to us?
I am definitely not looking at God and saying, “It’s his fault,” as some people are doing, pointing the finger and acting as if the shooter did not have a free will. I do believe God sovereign, always in complete control of all things, but that people still have the free will to choose their actions. And I believe God is always at work and trying to say something through the circumstances of life.
What is the shout coming down from heaven right now? I believe it is many things, but the main one is “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near!” (Matthew 3:2). Death has just been stared in the face; This is a great opportunity to reflect on the life after this one and on salvation. Salvation comes from the Lord Jesus Christ alone. Do you know him? Are you ready to meet him if you were to die today? The Bible says that the Lord will judge everyone based on what they have done (Revelation 20:12, 22:12). Have you repented of your sin? Have you received the Savior?
It’s time to wake up. It’s time to think about the things that really matter, the things of eternal significance, things of eternal value. God is calling out from heaven that he is real. He is calling out “Repent!” He is calling out his great salvation. The question is, will this deaf world be roused to hear him?
